THE WIFE BETWEEN US

St. Martin’s Press – January 9, 2018

Recently divorced by her wealthy husband, Vanessa lies in bed in her aunt’s apartment in New York City, feeling as if a heavy weight is pinning her there. She has no children, no money, and no real friends. Her entire life was the charismatic, passionate Richard. When she learns he is engaged to the woman with whom he had an affair, Vanessa is shattered. She hears Richard whispering the same sweet things he used to say to her: “I’m going to make you so happy. You are my world.” She pictures her replacement having the family with Richard that Vanessa so desperately wanted. As her obsession spirals, Vanessa begins to track the young, pretty woman who blithely stepped into her marriage. Assessing her. Waiting for the moment when she can do whatever is necessary to stop the wedding.

It is just weeks before Nellie’s wedding to Richard, and every detail is in place. On the surface, Nellie appears to be like many other young women who flock to Manhattan to begin their adult lives. She shares clothes with her roommate and struggles to whittle down her Visa bill and her waistline. But she isn’t as carefree as she tries to appear. In her mind, she calls it “the incident”—a tightly-held secret that forced her to flee Florida and keeps her from walking to her apartment alone late at night. It’s why a baseball bat is propped next to her bed, and three thick locks secure her door. When she meets Richard, who tells her he is newly single, he promises to keep her safe. But then the mysterious phone calls begin. A picture of her that rests on Richard’s nightstand is turned around. And someone cancels her wedding photographer. Nellie becomes haunted by the sense that someone is watching her. Someone who wants to harm her. But who?
